growing this summer…

It’s not exactly been a blazing hot June here. In fact since we got back from Australia the weather has been ridiculously windy but quite warm in the day and then dropping really cold at night. Apparently we had summer in April while I was away. This will be why all of my roses have already bloomed and died back.

About a fortnight ago Cambridgeshire was declared a drought area (this is never really news as the whole of East Anglia is semi-arid anyway), and ever since it doesn’t really seem to have stopped raining.

None of this is doing the damn garden any good – but I thought you might like a look at some photos anyway.

This is a tomato plant, growing upside down in the conservatory. It’s a bit the worse for wear because it was outside but in the middle of May nighttime temperatures were dropping as low as 5*C so it came back in again. Himself is nursing it back to health.

Cut and come again lettuces. Hardly thriving are they? I think we have eaten too many and not given them the chance to regrow inbetween!

Now these pots I am pleased with. On the left is nasturtiums, on the right lavender, both grown from seed. I’m hoping the nasturtiums will flower soon but the lavender won’t flower until next summer.

Herbs are doing well – I grew the Simon + Garfunkel collection (parsley, sage, rosemary + thyme) along with some oregano.

We have a little apple tree growing in a pot.  It looks like we might get one apple off it at least!

Strawberries – I’m not sure if I’ll get any fruit off them this year, they will have to be planted out again next year for that I think.  Man, gardening is a boring waiting game sometimes.

Potatoes – hopefully the eelworms haven’t got in and eaten them and we will have a bumper crop.  The more seasoned gardener will notice a rookie error here.  Yes, the potatoes are actually planted in the strawberry planter and the strawberries in the potato planter (which has a special opening to get the potatoes out of).  Sigh.  Better luck next year right?

Tomatoes and runner beans – as long as the very hungry caterpillars keep off these I should be OK.

I also have a pot of sunflowers growing but the damn caterpillars are loving those.

So I’m hoping for sun to bring my veg crops along a little.  I do not want a ton of green tomatoes like last year.  But Wimbledon Fornight starts today, so I’m not holding out a lot of hope….
