About

The Suburban Yogini

Hari Om!  I’m Rachel, I’m 36 and live in Cambridge UK.  The Suburban Yogini chronicles my life as a yoga teacher and student, a writer, a baker and general food lover, finding happiness, bliss and a healthy balance in both body and mind.  I hope that I can bring some inspiration to my readers and help them live healthy and balanced lives too.

Please feel free to contact me at any time: suburbanyogini [at] gmail [dot] com.

Yoga is in my blood. I come from a family of yogis, my father having trained as a yoga instructor, and I went to my first yoga class as a child. Despite having a rather eclectic past – two degrees in Classics and English Literature and several years working in law – yoga has always been a constant in my life and I have been teaching yoga since 2005.

My yoga background is based on the teachings of TKV Desikachar and the style of yoga I teach is ideal for anyone, from the complete beginner to the advanced yogi! I use the rhythm of the breath to energise the yoga practice and incorporate asana, pranayama, meditation and relaxation into my teaching. Yoga is not just asana (postures)!

I spent many years battling CFS and Fibromyalgia as well as an upper back scoliosis and have personal experience of using yoga as a therapeutic tool for managing and recuperating from chronic illness and injury. I truly believe that yoga is for everyone.  If I can do this anyone can!

The Supporting Cast

Himself

My long suffering beloved. He’s a software developer by day, and by night is my accomplice, webmaster general and official photographer (he has a better eye for the right angle to take a picture of a cup of coffee than I do!). I couldn’t have made half the progress I have in my life without him and in return I have managed to turn his diet around (and he even comes to yoga classes sometimes).

The Cats

Aurora and Johnny Park (both named after Foo Fighters songs), rule CasaYogini with an iron paw.  Our schedule is their schedule and heaven forfend the person who doesn’t bring their food on time.

Aurora is a tuxedo British Short Hair, seems to hate pretty much everything (especially her brother) and always looks cross.  She does like having her tummy scratched and tearing apart a variety of stuffed mice, rabbits and chickens.  Nothing is safe.

Mr Park is a common or garden tabby alley cat.  He likes to snuggle and be tickled and like any self respecting man enjoys eating, sleeping and breaking wind.  He also purrs like a train.

Without them the world would be a more boring place.

Wow I find it really inspirational that you quit law to follow your dreams (being a lawyer myself I would say it would be hard to give up the pay packet). Are you happier now?

Hi Rachel, thanks for sharing your kind comments over at my little corner of the blogosphere. Sounds like we share a lot of the same lifestyle choices and a love of feline friends :o ) I’ve dabbled with yoga but not in earnest – there’s a hatha yoga class on at the leisure centre that I’ve been toying with trying out. So many interests though and so little time (not complaining though)
